	National Freeway Bridge Seismic Analysis Evaluation and Retrofit Program Feasibility Study
Product Description

The National Freeway System is the main vein for Taiwan’s North-South transportation. It also acts as the life line for post disaster transportation recovery. In compliance with the revision of the highway bridge seismic design requirements after the 921 Earthquake, the Sun-Yat-Sen Freeway and the already completed sections of the Second Freeway System must be re-evaluated and retrofitted if they fail to meet the new standards. The project is done in conjunction with the National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering which provides HAZ-TAIWAN bridge classification models, fragility curves and economic loss estimation models. During the first stage (Nationl Freeway No.1: northern section of Yuanlin) and the second stage (National Freeway No.3: Xizhi to Chunan), seismic analysis evaluation and retrofits where conducted for 412 bridges and 201 bridge respectively. The project adopted many innovative methods to conduct analysis. These methods include the use of liquid viscous dampers, seismic force dispersion devices, FRP reinforcement covered piers, micro pile reinforcements, isolation tubes, etc., providing a significant contribution to the nation’s bridge earthquake damage mitigation program.
