Grand 50 Tower is a 50 story building with 5 underground levels, a total floor area of 62,827m2, and 220m in height. The tower started construction in 1990 and was the highest building in Taiwan when it was completed in 1992. The building is a steel eccentrically braced framed structure. Its exterior is a spectacular Chinese pagoda to imply “getting promotion step by step”, and its angular corners were rounded to imply “round and fullness”. Besides the profound cultural meaning, the round cornered facade also helps in reducing the wind pressures applied on the structure.
