Androclus and the Lion

IN Rome there was once a poor slave whose name was Androclus. His master was a cruel man, and so unkind to him that at last Androclus ran away.
从前，罗马有一个可怜的奴隶，他的叫做安德洛克拉斯。他的主人是个很残忍的人，对他非常严酷。因此，安德洛克拉斯最后逃走了。
He hid himself in a wild wood for many days; but there was no food to be found, and he grew so weak and sick that he thought he should die.
So one day he crept into a cave and lay down, and soon he was fast asleep.
他在原始森林里躲藏了许多天。但是那儿找不到食物，他逐渐生变成非常虚弱，又生病，他想自己就快要死了。一天，他爬进了一个山洞，

After a while a great noise woke him up. A lion had come into the cave, and was roaring loudly. Androclus was very much afraid, for he felt sure that the beast would kill him. Soon, however, he saw that the lion was not angry, but that he limped as though his foot hurt him.

Then Androclus grew so bold that he took hold of the lion’s lame paw to see what was the matter. The lion stood quite still, and rubbed his head against the man’s shoulder. He seemed to say, “I know that you will help me.”
于是安德洛克拉斯的胆子变大了。他抓起狮子跛了的爪子，想看看到底是怎么回事。那狮子安静地站着，用牠的头去磨擦他的肩膀，好像在说：

Androclus lifted the paw from the ground, and saw that it was a long,sharp thorn which hurt the lion so much. He took the end of the thorn in his fingers; then he gave a strong, quick pull, and out it came. The lion was full of joy.
He jumped about like a dog and, licked the hands and feet of his new friend.
安德洛克拉斯把牠的爪子从地面举了起来，发现有一根长长的尖刺使狮子如此的受伤。他用手指捏住尖刺的末端，用力迅速地把刺拔了出来。狮子高兴极了，牠像一只狗，跳了起来，去舔它的新朋友的手和脚(图1)。

Androclus was not at all afraid after this; and when night came, he and the lion lay down and slept side by side.
For a long time, the lion brought food to Androclus every day; and the two became such good friends, that Androclus found his new life a very happy one.
从此以后，安德洛克拉斯一点也不害怕了。当夜晚来临时，他和狮子肩并肩地靠在一起睡觉。(图2)

One day some soldiers who were passing through the wood found Androclus in the cave. They knew who he was, and so took him back to Rome.
一天，几个士兵经过森林，在山洞里发现了安德洛克拉斯。他们知道他是安德洛克拉斯，便把他带回了罗马。
It was the law at that time that every slave who ran away from his master should be made to fight a hungry lion. So a fierce lion was shut up for a while without food, and a time was set for the fight.
那时的法律规定，凡是从主人那儿逃跑的奴隶都必须和一只饥饿的狮子搏斗。因此，在搏斗的日子也已经决定时，将一只凶猛的狮子关了起来，有几天不给它喂食。
When the day came, thousands of people crowded to see the sport.
They went to such places at that time very much as people nowadays go to see a circus show or a game of baseball.
当那一天到来时，成千的人拥挤着去看这场搏斗。
在那个时候，他们去那样的地方就像我们今天去看一场马戏表演或一场棒球比赛那么多。
The door opened, and poor Androclus was brought in. He was almost dead with fear, for the roars of the lion could already be heard. He looked up, and saw that there was no pity in the thousands of faces around him.
门被打开了，可怜的德洛克拉斯被带了进来。他几乎快被吓死了，因为他已经听见狮子的咆哮声。他抬头望去，看到成千围观人的脸上，一点怜悯心都没有。
Then the hungry lion rushed in. With a single bound he reached the poor slave. Androclus gave a great cry, not of fear, but of gladness. It was his old friend, the lion of the cave.
接着，那只饥饿的狮子冲了进来，牠只一跳就到了可怜的奴隶跟前。德洛克拉斯大叫起来，不过，不是因为害怕，而是因为太高兴了。

The people, who had expected to see the man killed by the lion, were filled with wonder. They saw Androclus put his arms around the lion’s neck; they saw the lion lie down at his feet, and lick them lovingly; they saw the great beast rub his head against the slave’s face as though he wanted to be petted. They could not understand what it all meant.
那些盼着看到他被狮子咬死的人们，都充满了疑惑。他们看到德洛克拉斯伸出手臂搂住狮子的脖子；又看见狮子躺在他的脚下，深情地舔他的脚；还看见这只巨兽用牠的头去磨擦奴隶的脸，好像需要宠爱一样。他们不明白这是怎么回事。
After a while they asked Androclus to tell them about it. So he stood up befor them, and, with his arm around the lion’s neck, told how he and the beast had lived together in the cave.
过了一会儿，他们问德洛克拉斯告诉他们为什么会这样。因此，他在他们面前起来，手还环绕着在狮子的脖子，诉说了他如何和这头野兽共同在山洞里生活。(图3)

“I am a man,”he said; “but no man has ever befriended me. This poor lion alone has been kind to me; and we love each other as brothers.”

The people were not so bad that they could be cruel to the poor slave now.
“Live and be free! ”they cried.
“Live and be free! ”
Others cried,“Let the lion go free too! Give both of them their liberty! ”
And so Androclus was set free, and the lion was given to him for his own. And they lived together in Rome for many years.
现在，那些良知未泯的人们觉得不能再这样残酷地对待这个可怜的奴隶了。

安德洛克拉斯简介
安德洛克拉斯，是由民间故事故事由来，这个故事再现于中世纪伊索寓言的牧人和狮子(The Shepherd and the Lion)。
这个故事的最早形式是写在奥鲁斯‧泽里奥斯(Aulus Gellius)的阁楼之夜(Attic Nights)第五本书。作者说，阿皮翁是逃亡的奴隶。他藏在一个山洞里，这原来是一只受伤的狮子的巢穴。他会从动狮子的掌脚的拔出长刺，迫使脓液从受感染的伤口流出，并包扎好。狮子因此痊愈，像个驯养的狗一样，被他驯服，每天对他摇尾巴，并把食物带回来与他分享。
几年后，奴隶被抓回到罗马，导致他像别的逃亡的奴隶被监禁和在罗马的大竞技场被野生吞噬。当时有一位不知姓名的皇帝，推测是卡利古拉(Caligula)或克劳狄斯(Claudius)，这只宏伟的野兽竟与安德洛克拉斯朝日相处的是相同的狮子，牠再次显示其对奴隶的感情。在体认友谊的力量，皇帝赦免在现场的奴隶，并拥有狮子。阿皮翁然后继续住在罗马。
