A lion, no longer able, from the weakness of old age,to hunt for his prey, laid himself up in his den, and,breathing with great difficulty, and speaking with a lowvoice, gave out that he was very ill indeed. The reportsoon spread among the beasts, and there was greatlamentation for the sick lion. One after the other cameto see him; but, catching him thus alone, and in his ownden, the lion made an easy prey of them, and grew fatupon his diet.
一头狮子由于年老体衰，无力觅食猎物，只好躺在洞穴里，他呼吸非常困难，说话有气无力，的确显现病得很严重。
这消息很快在兽群之间传开了，大家都为病狮哀伤不已。他们一个接一个地来探望他；那知道这头狮子就这样待在自己的洞穴里，轻而易举地把探望者一个个捉住吃掉，把自己养得胖胖的。
The fox, suspecting the truth of the matter, cameat length to make his visit of inquiry, and standing atsome distance, asked his Majesty how he did? "All, mydearest friend," said the lion, "Is it you? Why do you'stand so far from me? Come, sweet friend, and poura word of consolation in the poor lion's ear, who hasbut a short time to live."
狐狸对这件事的真实性，感到怀疑，最后也来看个究竟。他站得有段距离，恭问万兽之王的病况，怎么样？狮子道:"啊，我最亲爱的朋友，是你吗？为什么站得那么远?来，好朋友，在我这可怜的狮子耳边说句安慰的话吧，我活不久了。"
"Bless you!" said the fox, "but excuse me if Icannot stay; for, to tell the truth, 1 feel quite uneasyat the mark of the foot-steps that I see here, all pointingtowards your den, and none returning outwards."
"愿上帝保佑你!"狐狸说:"但请原谅，我不能久留。老实说，我感到十分不安。我看到这里许多脚印都是只向府上走进去，没有一个是走出来的!"
Affairs are easier of entrance than of exit;and it isbut "common prudence to see our way out before weventure in.
凡事进易退难，一般在我们冒险进去以前，先要紧谨慎的思考，如何出来。
译者评论：
这个寓言告诉，许多动物听到万寿之王：狮子病了，都前来探望，却一个一个的送命，只有老谋深算的狐狸，来到狮子洞穴前，看到动物的脚印，有进没有出，心理就觉得有诈，尽管狮子甜言蜜语要狐狸进去安慰牠，但是狐狸硬是不肯，寓言也告诉我们要开始从事一件事情很容易，但是要收尾很难，凡事易进难出，谋定而后动，才是做人处世的不二法则。
有句很老套的话说"人在江湖身不由己"，很多人因为少年时的冲动，误入帮派，最后难以脱身。或因为朋友的引诱或自己的好奇，去吸毒，最后难以戒毒，这些都是易进难出的事。
譬如买股票，每个人都会买股票，一通电话打给营业员，就可以买到你想要的股票，所以说买股票容易，但接下来是如何赚钱，卖出股票，这就是出手难。这也是要买股票之前，要三思而行，谋定而后动，买股票，虽然一通电话就能买到，但是会不会赚钱，能不能买，还是要再三考虑，因此说买股票易进难出。
我们作任何事情，如果事先的想得越多，规划越详细，则这件事情的成功率就越大。凡事豫则立，不豫则废。这句话出汉代戴圣《礼记·中庸》。它说不论做什么事情，如果事先有所准备,就能成功; 没有准备，就不能成功。朋友们，作事情市时，易进难出，不要莽然行动，三思而行。
