A lion, no longer able, from the weakness of old age,to hunt for his prey, laid himself up in his den, and,breathing with great difficulty, and speaking with a lowvoice, gave out that he was very ill indeed. The reportsoon spread among the beasts, and there was greatlamentation for the sick lion. One after the other cameto see him; but, catching him thus alone, and in his ownden, the lion made an easy prey of them, and grew fatupon his diet.
一頭獅子由於年老體衰，無力覓食獵物，只好躺在洞穴裏，他呼吸非常困難，說話有氣無力，的確顯現病得很嚴重。
這消息很快在獸群之間傳開了，大家都為病獅哀傷不已。他們一個接一個地來探望他；那知道這頭獅子就這樣待在自己的洞穴裏，輕而易舉地把探望者一個個捉住吃掉，把自己養得胖胖的。
The fox, suspecting the truth of the matter, cameat length to make his visit of inquiry, and standing atsome distance, asked his Majesty how he did? "All, mydearest friend," said the lion, "Is it you? Why do you'stand so far from me? Come, sweet friend, and poura word of consolation in the poor lion's ear, who hasbut a short time to live."
狐狸對這件事的真實性，感到懷疑，最後也來看個究竟。他站得有段距離，恭問萬獸之王的病況，怎麼樣？獅子道:"啊，我最親愛的朋友，是你嗎？為什麼站得那麼遠?來，好朋友，在我這可憐的獅子耳邊說句安慰的話吧，我活不久了。"
"Bless you!" said the fox, "but excuse me if Icannot stay; for, to tell the truth, 1 feel quite uneasyat the mark of the foot-steps that I see here, all pointingtowards your den, and none returning outwards."
"願上帝保祐你!"狐狸說:"但請原諒，我不能久留。老實說，我感到十分不安。我看到這裏許多腳印都是只向府上走進去，沒有一個是走出來的!"
Affairs are easier of entrance than of exit;and it isbut "common prudence to see our way out before weventure in.
凡事進易退難，一般在我們冒險進去以前，先要緊謹慎的思考，如何出來。
譯者評論：
這個寓言告訴，許多動物聽到萬壽之王：獅子病了，都前來探望，卻一個一個的送命，只有老謀深算的狐狸，來到獅子洞穴前，看到動物的腳印，有進沒有出，心理就覺得有詐，儘管獅子甜言蜜語要狐狸進去安慰牠，但是狐狸硬是不肯，寓言也告訴我們要開始從事一件事情很容易，但是要收尾很難，凡事易進難出，謀定而後動，才是做人處世的不二法則。
有句很老套的話說"人在江湖身不由己"，很多人因為少年時的衝動，誤入幫派，最後難以脫身。或因為朋友的引誘或自己的好奇，去吸毒，最後難以戒毒，這些都是易進難出的事。
譬如買股票，每個人都會買股票，一通電話打給營業員，就可以買到你想要的股票，所以說買股票容易，但接下來是如何賺錢，賣出股票，這就是出手難。這也是要買股票之前，要三思而行，謀定而後動，買股票，雖然一通電話就能買到，但是會不會賺錢，能不能買，還是要再三考慮，因此說買股票易進難出。
我們作任何事情，如果事先的想得越多，規劃越詳細，則這件事情的成功率就越大。凡事豫則立，不豫則廢。這句話出漢代戴聖《禮記·中庸》。它說不論做什麼事情，如果事先有所準備,就能成功; 沒有準備，就不能成功。朋友們，作事情市時，易進難出，不要莽然行動，三思而行。
