这是拉封丹(Jean de La Fontaine)的寓言第10卷第1篇，原文叫THE TWO RATS, THE FOX, AND THE EGG。它讲：
两只老鼠出外觅食，找到一颗蛋。对老鼠来说，有一颗蛋当一餐已经够了，没有必要找到一只牛腿。他们感受到旺盛的食欲和巨大的喜悦。
这时候有别的动物出现了，原来是狐狸。这个不速之客让牠们十分头痛。该怎样保护蛋呢?将它包捆起来，两人用前脚一起扛走吗?或者是滚走、还是拖走呢？但都太危险了，不可能做到。这时「需要」智慧，提供牠们一个妙计。抢夺的高手远在五百步之外，牠们有充分的时间可以将蛋拖回到家里。因此一只老鼠仰躺在地上，将蛋抱在怀里，另一只则拉着对方的尾巴，跌跌撞撞地，将蛋拖回到家里。
这个寓言是说：山穷水尽疑无路柳暗花明又一村，人不论前路多么难行难辨，只要坚定信念，勇于开拓，人生就能“绝处逢生”，出现一个充满光明与希望的崭新境界。但是在山穷水尽无论是否可走时，但凭坚定信念，勇于开拓，还是不够的，就像孔子说的，暴虎冯河，有勇无谋，鲁莽冒险，最后还是会失败，因此拉封登：希望动物从小就有思考的能力，遇到事情才能独立解决。寓言中的这二只老鼠，也是在遭遇困难时，利用自己的智慧，解决问题，将蛋抱回家。

二只老鼠出外觅食，发现一颗蛋
Two rats in foraging fell on an egg,
对于牠们这些士绅，从各方面来看，当一餐上流社会人家的晚餐，绝对足够了。
For gentry such as they
A genteel dinner every way;
牠们无需再找一只牛腿了。
They needed not to find an ox's leg.
牠们充满旺盛的喜悦和食欲，
Brimful of joy and appetite,
牠们找一个箱子想将蛋它装入箱子。
但是缺乏锁将箱子锁得紧紧的，
They were about to sack the box,
So tight without the aid of locks,
突然间，看到有人走到。
原来是一只高尚年轻的女狐狸爵士
When suddenly there came in sight
A personage--Sir Pullet Fox.
因为母狐狸也难以控制命运，所以运气不是不能应付的。
Sure, luck was never more untoward
Since Fortune was a vixen froward!
问题是如何将牠们发现的蛋和熏肉收好？
牠们的战利品不能被夺走。
How should they save their egg--and bacon?
Their plunder couldn't then be bagg'd;
那要用前爪共同扛走，
或滚走，或拖走呢？
Should it in forward paws be taken,
Or roll'd along, or dragg'd?
每种方法，似乎不可能的。
并且每一种都非常危险。
Each method seem'd impossible,
And each was then of danger full.
这时需要一个智慧之母，
帮助牠们提供一个妙计。
Necessity, ingenious mother,
Brought forth what help'd them from their pother.
由于仍然有机会挽救他们的猎物，
因为这个食客尚在几百码之外，
这时，牠们想到一个办法，让一只老鼠仰躺在地上，将蛋抱住。
然后，尽管有许多折腾和拍打，
仰躺在地上的老鼠，在拖拉时，外皮可能会撕破，但那也应该的。
这时另一只老鼠托着它的尾巴，走回家。
谁敢眨眨眼睛随便去推理，野兽也拥有思想吗？
As still there was a chance to save their prey,--
The sponger yet some hundred yards away,--
One seized the egg, and turn'd upon his back,
And then, in spite of many a thump and thwack,
That would have torn, perhaps, a coat of mail,
The other dragg'd him by the tail.
Who dares the inference to blink,
That beasts possess wherewith to think?
