11. a stick in the mud (老古板)
英文意思:a dull , conservative person (呆滯的、保守的人)
Stick是釘住、木棍,手杖,stick in the mud是說陷在泥漿中,動彈不得,a stick in the mud是木棍插在泥漿中,用來比喻墨守成規,不懂得求新、求變的人是老古板或老古董。
例如:
A motorcycle had become stuck in the mud.
(一輛摩托車陷在泥淖中。)
The bus stuck in the mud.
(公共汽車陷在泥裡了。)
The wheels are stuck in the mud. The car won 't move.
(輪胎卡在泥巴裡了,車子動不了。)
My car ' s stuck in the mud , and it won ' t budge
我的車陷入泥中,一動也不動。
You ' re such a stick in the mud
你真老古板,腦袋不開竅!
You may regard my husband as a stick-in-the-mud, But on my part I like his personality .
你可以說我的丈夫是個老古董,但是我倒很喜歡他的這種性格。

12.to recharge one’s batteries (休息再充電)
英文意思: to rest and regain one’s energy(休息,恢復某人的精力)
股票市場有一句名言:休息是為走更長的路,某人在股票市場,投資老是失利,這時就不要繼續在股票市場混了,應暫時退出,重新檢討,充實自己,然後再出發,一個人長期工作耗盡他的精力,每隔一陣子總得休息休息,恢復體力,就如同蓄電池用久了,電力用光了,須用充電器再充電,充實電力。
例如:
When you take a break , you give your brain a much needed chance to relax , and you allow yourself time to recharge your batteries.
(當你放鬆時,你不僅給大腦一個非常必要的機會鬆弛一下,也給你自己重新充電的時間。)
Dora : you need to get away from this farm and take a vacation to recharge your batteries.
朵拉:你真的需要離開這個農場,去渡個假充充電了。
“Mike likes to recharge his batteries with some beers and a football game.”
(邁克喜歡通過喝些啤酒和踢足球來放鬆自己。)
“Work has been really hectic lately. I need to take a vacation and recharge my batteries.”
(最近工作很繁忙,我需要一段假期休息調整以重獲精力。)
“Watching a movie at home is a good way to recharge your batteries after a busy week.”
(經過一周的忙碌,在家看一場電影是一個不錯的選擇。)
13. strut one’s stuff(臭屁、愛現)
英文意思:to act proud or show off (表現驕傲或吹牛)
Strut是趾高氣揚,昂首闊步的高傲姿態,strut one’s stuff就是把一個人的僅有材料眩耀出來,自覺了不起。
例如;
A:Why don’t people like him?
A:為什麼大家不喜歡他。
B:He’s always strutting stuff around the office.
因為他在辦公室很臭屁、愛現。
When you strut your stuff, you’re not being a show-off.
當你高視闊步的時候,你並不是在炫耀。
14. Show someone the ropes(教人訣竅)
英文意思:to teach someone a new job.(教某人新工作)
這裡的”ropes”指的是帆船上,讓新手的水手手忙腳亂的無數根繩子,Show someone the ropes是形容老水手指引新水手,如何使用繩子,引申職場上的老手引導新人熟悉工作的環境。

The new secretary started today so I spent most of the morning showing her the ropes.
新來的秘書今天開始工作,所以我花了一上午時間來教她熟悉工作。
A: I’m really nervous about my new job.

B:別擔心,我會教你怎麼做。
15. dog eat dog(狗咬狗)
英文意思:a ruthlessly competitive situation(一個無情的競爭環境)
英文用「狗咬狗」來形容非常劇烈的競爭,為了自己的利益,不擇手段,彼此互咬,毫不留情。
例如:
The only rule of the market place was dog-eat-dog.
(市場上的唯一準則是狗咬狗,無情的競爭。)
With shrinking markets , it's dog eat dog for every company in this field.
(由於市場的萎縮,這些公司展開了你死我活的競爭。)
