一個在河裹游泳的小男孩正處於被溺水的危險中。他對路過的遊客大聲喊道：「救命！」。這位遊客並沒有伸出援助的手，反而若無其事地站著，並且責罵小孩子，作事這麼不謹慎。「喔，先生！」小孩子喊道：「祈求你現在先援助我，之後再來責備我。」
譯者評論：對於陷在困境的人，因先及時給予實質的幫助，讓他脫離困境，至於責備，等脫離困境再說。
The boy bathing
A Boy bathing in a river was in danger of being
drowned. He called out to a traveler, passing by. for help. The
traveler, instead of holding out a helping hand, stood by
unconcernedly, and scolded the boy for his imprudence. "Oh,
sir!" cried the youth, "pray help me now, and scold me afterwards.”
